While driving to work recently, a trusty set of tie down straps decided to snap with only a somewhat ominous “whoosh” warning sound. I had a second to ponder “what goes whoosh” before I could see the Cruiser ECO COMP 11’6″ do a back flip off the roof rack and cart wheel down the road in my rear view mirror.I think it did at least 2-3 full nose over tail barrel rolls. Thankfully it didn’t hit any cars behind me. I jammed on brakes and did U turn, fearing the worst. A totally destroyed board!
I had been going about 45 mph at the time, and the pictures tell the story – just a bit of road rash on the extremely durable ASA outer skin. Any other epoxy board would have been totalled, but I paddled the 11’6″ ECO COMP that night!

The Standup Paddleblog reported on the Steel Pier Classic and Surf Art Expo last year and we’re glad to see its return for the 2011 SUP season. The Memorial Day SUP event will take place on May 28th-30th and will once again feature a wide array of water sport races with competitive and amateur categories for each. The Virgina Longboard Federation will once again host the event at Virginia Beach. Water sport enthusiasts will be able to enjoy stand-up paddleboarding, SUP surfing, surfing, nose riding, amongst other race disciplines. What makes the Steel Pier Classic and Surf Art Expo is their focus on featuring local artists whose focus is on the ocean or water sports in general. At this year’s event there looks to be around 400 participants with 2000-4000 enthusiasts observing the water sports event each day. The 2011 Gerry Lopez Rainbow Sandals Battle of the Paddle was held recently at Duke Kahanamoku Beach in Hawaii. Once again the 2 day event was blessed with gorgeous weather and a great turn out of paddleboarders and SUP spectators. Many stand up paddleboard events are about the competition but there’s something electric about the Battle of the Paddle events. These events aren’t only about placing first but also about the pure love of SUP that everyone has that keeps people coming back year after year. This year’s event brought out hundreds to watch the paddleboard races and the SUP racers put on a great show for all of them. This year’s event included an Elite race that included beach sprinting and a 5 mile stand-up paddle, but also had kids races, women’s race, endurance races, and other varieties.
